Education overview
OSK PhD education programme

The OSK offers several courses and other activities that will help PhD candidates to attain the skills and experience required to successfully conduct their research and function within the academic environment. The education programme is made up out of three elements: two courses focused on structuring principles and the so-called progress reports.

The two courses in the programme, Paradigms in Art- and Architectural History and Structuring Art History: The Architecture of the PhD-thesis, focus on different problems concerning structure in written art history. Paradigms in Art- and Architectural History focuses on the boundaries of the arthistorical discipline (ECTS: 2.5). Aside from questioning what problems arthistorical structuring systems can cause, during the course attention will be paid to the problems it can cause in the art historical writing and research of the PhD candidates. The students will discuss theoretical texts on this matter but will also analyze the ways in which their own research is affected. Structuring Art History: The Architecture of the PhD-thesis focuses on ways to structure the PhD thesis (ECTS: 2). The PhD candidates will examine and discuss published examples en will also present the (provisory) structure of their own thesis to each other for further discussion. As such this course is especially useful to PhD candidates who are in their second or third year (at least 50% of the writing done) and/or are looking or working on the final structure for their thesis.

Both previously mentioned courses are supplemented by a trajectory of progress reports in which the PhD candidates publically present the progress of their research to a specialist within the appropriate field of study (ECTS: 3). During the PhD trajectory there will be two presentation moments: one after approximately one year in which the student presents his or her fine-tuned research plan, and a second presentation at the beginning of the third year during which research results will be presented and discussed.

PhD candidates who have officially registered as members of the OSK are required to participate in all of the courses described above. Are you interested in our education programme, but have not registered yet? Check the header ‘Registration’ on this website to officially subscribe!

Besides the regular education programme the OSK also offers workshops, master classes and tutorials of a more incidental nature taught by specialists from both the academic and museum world. Moreover, PhD candidates are also more than welcome to join in on the annual OSK Summer and Winter Schools.

Where possible, the OSK facilitates initiatives of her PhD candidates. We welcome them to communicate ideas for courses and meetings in order to ensure that the programme offered answers to the needs of our public. We therefore also encourage PhD candidates to work together with our specialized research sections in organizing conferences and meetings. Aside from this, the OSK also assists in the organization of PhD meetings between students (in terms of arranging for locations and communication). These meetings are meant as a platform for students to exchange knowledge and ideas. Groups of PhD candidates who are interested in organizing such a meeting can contact the OSK secretary at: info [at] onderzoekschoolkunstgeschiedenis.nl

PhD candidates from TU Delft

PhD candidates from TU Delft (Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment) are very welcome to participate in OSK PhD courses.  OSK and the Graduate School A + BE have made special agreements concerning the participation of PhD candidates in the OSK programme. If you would like to take part in an OSK course, please contact both your promotor and the department for approval. The Graduate School A + BE will then contact OSK to enroll you.  After successful participation you will receive a certificate from OSK, stating the amount of ECTS earned. Your GS will convert this to GS-credits and register them.

Research Master Education

The national introduction of the two-year Research Masters in art history has lead most universities to the decision to abbreviate the duration of the general PhD trajectory. Together, the two are now considered as the path towards a career in art historical research. At most universities the Research Master and PhD education have thus already been joined in the so-called Graduate Schools. Following this development, the OSK also started offering education tailored to the level of Reseach Master students. Amongst others, they can participate in the annual Summer and Winter Schools as a complement to the education offered by their local Graduate School. Each is rewarded with at least 5 ECTS. The addressed topics  have a rotation cycle of two years, which allows for every student to participate in 4 different courses at a total of 20 ECTS. The OSK also organizes workshops, masterclasses and tutorials of a more incidental nature in which the students can participate.

OSK Summer School: The museum and its collection: current challenges and dilemmas

This year’s OSK Summer School will be dedicated to some classical and current dilemmas in the museum world. Four topics have been selected, and all of them will be studied by discussing one specific case: the museum in search of a profile (branding); the problem of presenting the permanent collection as though it were an event; the desire to integrate relics of history and works of art in the presentation of the museum’s collection; and the experience of the museum’s history as a blessing or a burden.
