From 14 June – 9 September, the Mauritshuis will restore one of its oldest and most important paintings – The Lamentation of Christ by Rogier van der Wedyen (c.1460-1464) – in a specially built studio in the exhibition space of the museum. The presentation will offer information about the many aspects of technical and art-historical research that has been conducted in preparation for the restoration. How has the painting been made? What is the role of the underdrawing? And what about the attribution to Van der Weyden?

During the OSK workshop the results of the art-historical and technical research will be presented by the curators and conservators of the Mauritshuis that have been involved in the project. Attention will also be given to the set-up of the exhibition: why has the museum decided to do a public restoration, how do you present this, and what elements need to be taken into consideration? Before the museum opens we will visit the exhibition space, which will offer the opportunity to closely study The Lamentation and discuss the exhibition. In the afternoon, the restoration studio and the permanent collection will be visited in small groups, accompanied by restorers and curators of the Mauritshuis.

Information about the exhibition on the website of the Mauritshuis: https://www.mauritshuis.nl/en/discover/exhibitions/rogier-van-der-weyden-unveiled/.
